- Lovell Harrison Rousseau,U.S.A., appointed Maj. Gen.
- Brig. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, supersedes Brig. Gen. Robert Anderson, USA, the hero of Fort Sumter, SC, in the command of the Dept. of the Cumberland, Kentucky and Tennessee, with his headquarters at Lousiville, KY. Anderson is relieved due to his failing health, and apparent nervous breakdown.

- The Battle of Perryville, or Chaplin Hills, KY, the only major battle fought in Kentucky, with Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, USA, forcing Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, to retreat to the southeast, ending the Confederate threat on Kentucky. Total casualties approximate 7,600.
- Brig. Gen. James Streshly Jackson, USA, is mortally wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY, while leading his command.
- Brig. Gen. William Rufus Terrill, USA, is mortally wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY, receiving his death wound from a Confederate artillery shell fragment and dying the same day in a field hospital.
- Brig. Gen. Orlando B. Wilcox, USA, supersedes Brig. Gen. Jacob D. Cox in the command of the 9th US Army Corps, Army of the Potomac.
