  • Capt. Charles Wilkes, of the USS San Jacinto, stops the British mail ship, Trent, off the coast of Cuba, and captures the two Confederate Commissioners to France and England, James Mason and John Slidell.
  • Brig. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, USA, commanding the Dept. of the Cumberland, expresses his opinion that fugitive slaves must be delivered by upon an application of their masters, in conformity to the laws of the state of Kentucky.
  • Engagement at Ivy Mountain and skirmish at Piketon, or Fry Mountain, KY, Brig. Gen. William Nelson, USA, fighting Col. John Williams, CSA. (Nov 8-9)
  • Federal reconnaissance on Hilton Head, SC, toward Beauford, by the recently landed Union troops, under Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Sherman, USA.

  • The CSS Alabama continues plundering Union shipping by burning the T.B. Wales, in the Atlantic, near Bermuda.
  • Skirmish near Cato, KS.
  • Skirmish at Burkesville, KY.
  • Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, USA, is assigned to the command of the Dept. of the Gulf, LA, replacing Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, USA, who had earned a despicable reputation for his treatment of the citizens of New Orleans, LA, as President Lincoln continues to reshuffle his high command of officers.
