  • Judge Humphreys issues a writ of habeas corpus in the cases of certain bridge-burners. The writ, however, is not obeyed by the military, East Tennessee.

  • The Assault on Fort Sanders, (or Fort Loudon) Knoxville, TN, by Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet, CSA, is repulsed and the attempt by the Confederates to eradicate the Federals from Knoxville, TN, is ended, as Longstreet will retreat toward Virginia, fully aware that reinforcements under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, are on their way.

  • The engagement with Cheyenne Indians on Sand Creek, the Colorado Territory, with the Union massacre of Cheyenne women and children, 40 miles south of Fort Lyon, Denver, by Col. John M. Chivington, 1st Colorado Cavalry.
  • Skirmish near Louisville, GA, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, continues on his March to the sea.
  • Skirmish at Doyal's Plantation, LA, with a small party of jayhawkers, near Donaldsonville.
