  • The CSS Alabama is officially commissioned off the island of Terceira, Azores, to begin a two year career of plundering US merchant vessels.

  • Skirmish at Gunter's Landing, near Port Deposit, AL, the Chickamauga Campaign.
  • Federal scout to Barbee's Cross-Roads, VA.
  • Skirmish at Coyle's Tavern, near Fairfax Court-House, VA.
  • Skirmish near King George Court-House, VA, and Port Conway, with Union Cavalry under Brig. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick, USA.
  • Maj. John Mosby's Confederate Operations in Virginia, including the attacking of the Union outpost near Waterloo, the burning of bridges, capturing prisoners, horses, mules, and sutler's goods near Warrenton Junction, Alexandria. (Aug 24-Sep 30)
  • Skirmish near Warm Springs, VA, with Brig. Gen. William W. Averell, USA.
Wednesday August 24 1864
  • Action at Ashley's and Jones' (Hay) Stations, near Devall's Bluff, AR, as Brig. Gen. Joseph O. Shelby, CSA, attacks Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele's Federals, destroying telegraph lines, tearing up railroad tracks, torching hay and machinery. Steele requests a Union gunboat.
  • Skirmish on Gunter's Prairie, the Indian Territory, where the Federals kill 20 Rebels and capture 14, as well as 150 mules and horses, and burn a large quantity of hay.
  • Skirmish at Annandale, VA, with Lieut. Col. John S. Mosby, 43rd Virginia Battalion and his Virginia Partisan Irregulars.
  • Skirmish near Reams' Station, VA, on the Weldon Railroad, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.
  • Action on the Vaughan Road, near Reams' Station, VA, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.
  • Skirmish at Halltown, WV, the Shenandoah Valley, VA, Campaign.
