  • Brig. Gen. John Carpenter Carter, CSA, dies from wounds he received at the Battle of Franklin, TN, on Nov 30.
  • Federal expedition against Tonto Apache Indians in Central Arizona, with skirmish (Dec 15) on Hassayampa Creek, where the Yankees kill 11 of 15 Apache warriors, the other 4 fleeing. The Federals then burn their camp. (Dec 10-23)
  • Skirmish near Savannah, GA, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, opts not to attack the fortified Confederate positions under Lieut. Gen. William Hardee, CSA, but instead, to lay siege to the city.
  • The capture and burning of the Confederate steamer, Ida, on the Savannah, River, GA, the "March to the Sea," Campaign by Maj. Gen. Wm Sherman.
