  • THE SURRENDER OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY IN NORTH CAROLINA AT BENNETT'S HOUSE. NEAR DURHAMIS STATION. NC. by Gen. Joseph Eggleston Johnston. CSA. to Lieut. Gen. Ulysses Simpson Grant, accompanied by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. USA, this time the terms are the same as those given Gen. Robert E. Lee. CSA.
  • President Jefferson Davis and his entourage sets out from Charlotee, NC, headed for the territory west of the Mississippi to carry on the struggle for Southern independence. Secretary of the Treasury, G.A. Trenholm, resigns due to poor health and will be replaced by Postmaster General Regan.
  • Federal operations in the Shenandoah Valley, VA, including shots fired by a small band of guerrillas at the Federals (Apr 26), and the refusal of Col. Thompson, CSA, and his Jackson's Confederate Cavalry command of about 100 to accept terms of surrender. They disband into the hills around the Shenandoah Valley. (Apr 26-May 5)
  • John Wilkes Booth and David E. Herold are captured at Richard H. Garrett's Farm, near Port Royal, and north of Bowling Green, VA, where Booth is mortally wounded.
