  • Skirmishes at and near Monroe Station, MO, with Col. Robert F. Smith, USA, 16th IL Infantry. (Jul 9-11)
  • Maj. Gen. Leonidas Polk, CSA, telegraphs to the Richmond, VA, authorities that "no time is to be lost in East Tennessee."
  • Skirmish at Vienna, VA.
  • The US House of Representatives resolves that it is not the duty of Union soldiers to capture and return fugitive slaves.
Wednesday July 9 1862
  • Skirmish near Aberdeen, AR.
  • Affair at the Weaverville Crossing of the Mad River, CA.
  • Col. John Hunt Morgan's Rebel troops capture Tompkinsville, KY.
  • Skirmish at Lotspeich Farm, near Wadesburg, MO.
  • Union troops capture Hamilton, NC, Roanoke River, with the aid of the Federal gunboats, USS Ceres, USS Perry, and the USS Shawseen.
  • Confederate expedition to Fenwick's Island, SC.
  • Federal demonstration against Pocotaligo, SC. (Jul 9-10)
  • Federal reconnaissance on the Long Bridge Road, VA.
Thursday July 9 1863
  • Indian attack on a private train transporting Government stores to Fort Gaston, at Redwood Creek.
  • Skirmish at Corydon, Indiana, with Brig. Gen. John Morgan, CSA.
  • Skirmish at Bradenburg, KY, with Brig. Gen. John Morgan, CSA.
  • Maj. Gen. Franklin Gardner, CSA, formally surrenders Port Hudson, LA, and about 6,500 men to Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks, USA.
  • Skirmish at Benevola (or Beaver Creek), MD, as Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, continued to move the Army of Northern Virginia back to Virginia.
  • Skirmishes near Clinton and Jackson, MS, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, Marches on Jackson.
  • Explosion of artillery ammunition at Fort Lyon, VA, as Union soldiers inspect the shells, with 20 deaths and 14 wounded.
  • Confederate expedition from Richmond to Mathias Point, VA.
Saturday July 9 1864
  • Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, pushes Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, and the Army of Tennessee back to the defenses of Atlanta, GA.
  • The Confederate forces under Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, levy the city of Frederick, MD for $200,000 in retribution for the suffering extracted on the Shenandoah Valley by Maj. Gen. David Hunter, USA.
  • The CSS Florida continues to harass Union shipping off the coast of Maryland.
  • The Battle of Monocacy, MD, where Lieut. Gen. Jubal A. Early, CSA, routs the Federals under Maj. Gen. Lewis Wallace, USA, and heads toward Washington, DC.
  • Skirmish at Urbana, MD.
  • Federal operations against guerrillas in the vicinity of Wellington, MO, with skirmishes at Warder's Church (Jul 10), and at Columbus, Johnson County, with guerrilla Wilhite ending up with 28 balls through him or in him, another of his companions receiving 18 rifle balls. (Jul 12). (Jul 9-13)
  • Action at Burden's Causeway, John's Island, SC.
  • 2 additional divisions of the 6th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, embark at City Point, VA, the Petersburg, VA, lines for the defense of Washington, DC, against Jubal Early, CSA. Maj. Gen. George Meade, USA, orders additional pressure to be exerted on Gen. Robert E. Lee's Petersburg, VA, lines.
