  • Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson, CSA, returns to Winchester, VA, from his stay in Romney, WV.
Thursday January 22 1863
  • The CSS Florida captures and burns the vessels Corris and the Windward, off the coast of Cuba.
  • Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, assumes the command of all the troops in Arkansas within reach of his orders, relegating Maj. Gen. John McClernand, USA, to the role of a Corps commander.
  • Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler, CSA, is assigned to the command of all the cavalry in Middle Tennessee
  • Skirmish in Pocahontas County, WV.
Friday January 22 1864
  • Skirmishes at Clear Creek and Tomahawk, in Northwestern AR.
  • Affair at Subligna, GA, where a Federal surprise attack forces the Georgia State Guards to retire toward La Fayette, GA.
  • Federal expedition from Union City to Trenton, TN, and due to the rising river and ice flow, are unable to cross the Obion River. (Jan 22-27)
  • The capture of 28 Confederate forage-wagons near Wilsonville, TN. Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet reports he has none to replace the ones lost, noting that the Federals have abandoned and burned 200 Federal wagons in their retreat to Knoxville. Maj. Gen. William Thompson Martin, CSA, captured 800 beef cattle.
  • Affair at Ellis' Ford, VA, as the Federal Cavalry patrol is again attacked by the Confederates, the Federals sustaining casualties, 1 mortal.
  • Skirmish at Germantown, VA.
Sunday January 22 1865
  • Skirmish on the Benton Road, near Little Rock, AR, with guerrillas.
  • Federal expedition from Little Rock to Mount Elba, AR, with skirmishes at Saline River. (Jan 22-Feb 4)
