- The New Mexico Territory is embraced into the Western Dept.
- Martinsburg, WV, is occupied by the Union forces of Brig. Gen. Robert Patterson, USA. The Confederate forces of Brig. Gen. Joseph Eggleston Johnston's, CSA, retreat.
Thursday July 3 1862
- Skirmish near Russellville, AL, between Cavalry soldiers.
- Skirmish at Locust Grove, the Indian Territory, with Pro-Union Indians.
- Union mortar boats continue to bombard Vicksburg, MS.
- Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, CSA, assumes the command of the Confederate Army of the West, TN.
- Skirmishes near Herring Creek, or Harrison's Landing, VA. (Jul 3-4)
- Federal reconnaissance from Harrison's Landing, on the Charles City Road, VA.
Friday July 3 1863
- The Third Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, PA. Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, orders Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet, CSA, to attack the center of Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade's, USA, line. The attack consists of the following Confederate divisions:
- Maj. Gen. Henry Heth's Division, commanded by Brig. Gen. James Johnston Pettigrew, Heth seriously wounded Jul 1.
- Maj. Gen. Dorsey Pender's Division, commanded by Maj. Gen. Isaac Ridgeway Trimble, Pender mortally wounded Jul 2; Trimble loses a leg and is captured.
- Maj. Gen. George Edward Pickett's Division.
Total casualties for the 3 days battle for both sides approximate 43,500.
- Brig. Gen. Lewis Addison Armistead, CSA, is mortally wounded during Pickett's Charge, the Battle of Gettysburg, PA, with his hand on a Federal cannon at the apex of the copse of trees the Confederates were attempting to reach, is captured by the Federals.
- Brig. Gen. William Barksdale, CSA, dies from wounds suffered the day before at Gettysburg, PA.
- Gen. Richard Brooke Garnett, CSA, is mortally wounded during Pickett's Charge, the bloody climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, PA.
- Brig. Gen. Elon John Farnsworth, USA, is mortally wounded as his cavalry command counterattacks Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet's, CSA, flank following the repulse of Pickett's Charge, during the Battle of Gettysburg, PA.
- Brig. Gen. Samuel Kosciuszko Zook, USA, dies after being mortally wounded the day before at the Battle of Gettysburg.
- Strong Vincent, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen. after being mortally wounded.
- Confederate expedition to Ossabaw Island and McDonald's place, GA, where the Rebels surprise and capture 2 pickets and 8 negroes.
- Federal expedition from Beaver Creek, KY, into Southwestern Virginia, with skirmishes:
- at Pond Creek, KY, (Jul 6) and
- at Gladesville, VA. (Jul 7).

- Skirmish at Boiling Fork, near Winchester, TN.
- Federal scouts from Memphis, TN, on the Hernando and Horn Lake roads, with skirmishes just a few miles outside Memphis.
- Suffolk, VA, is evacuated by the Union forces.

- Skirmish in Platte County, MO, as the Federals attack, kill and wound a band of guerrillas and bushwackers, in the general vicinity of St. Joseph, MO.
- Union assaults on Fort Johnson and Battery Simkins, Charleston Harbor, SC, are repulsed.
