  • The Battle of Corinth, MS, sees Maj. Gens. Earl Van Dorn and Sterling Price pushing Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans, USA, back towards the defenses of Corinth, but failing to take this important rail center, they retreat toward Chewalla, 10 miles north west of Corinth on Oct 4. Total casualties approximate 6,750. (Oct 3-4)
