- Maj. Gen. Braxton Bragg's, CS A, command is extended over the coast and state of Alabama.
- Federal reconnaissance from Cairo, IL, to Lucas Bend, MO, by Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA aboard the USS Lexington and the USS Tyler.
- President Abraham Lincoln sends Secretary of War, Simon Cameron to deliver a letter to Brig. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis, USA, which asks Curtis if he believed Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont, USA, should be relieved of command.

- Middle and East Florida is embraced in General Pierre G.T. Beauregard's Confederate command of Florida's southeast coast.
- The Federals capture Governor Milton of Florida.
- Skirmishes at Brown Hill and Perryville, KY, as Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, USA, continues to pursue Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA.
- Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, CSA, is assigned to the command of the Army of Kentucky.
- Skirmish near Box Ford, Hatchie River, MS.
- Skirmish near Ripley, MS.
- Skirmish near Ruckersville, MS.
- Brig. Gen. Eugene Asa Carr, USA, assumes the command of the Army of the Southwest, MO, AR.
- Skirmish near New Franklin, Howard County, MO.

- Skirmish near La Vergue, TN, results in a Union victory.

- The engagement on the Darbytown and New Market Roads, including combats at Johnson's Farm and Four-Mile Creek, as Confederate forces attack and try to push back the Union siege forces around Petersburg, VA, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.
- Brig. Gen. John Gregg, CSA, is mortally wounded in the action while attempting to push back the Federal troops on the Darbytown Road, below Richmond, VA.
