- James Monroe Goggin, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
- Skirmish at the Little Ogeechee River, GA, the "March to the Sea," Campaign by Maj. Gen. Wm. T. Sherman, including the following skirmishes in Georgia:
- Skirmish near Lumpkin's Station, GA.
- Skirmish near Statesborough, GA.
- Skirmish at Station No. 5, on the Georgia Central Railroad, GA.
- The engagement at Waynesborough, GA, as Maj. Gen. Joseph O. Wheeler's, CSA, Confederate cavalry attacks Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's Cavalry, under Brig. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick who was guarding the Union men who were occupied destroying railroad tracks. Wheeler is eventually driven off.
- Skirmish with Indians on Cow Creek, 15 miles east of Fort Zarah, KS, as the Indians attack and capture a 6-mule team and wagon loaded with ammunition for the Fort.
- Skirmish on the New Texas road, near Morganza, LA, as Rebels dressed in Federal uniforms fire on the Union pickets.
- Action at Bell's Mills, TN.
- Skirmish at White's Station, near Memphis, TN, where Union advance guards and flankers charge after withdrawing Rebels, only to find themselves surrounded and made prisoners.
- Skirmish near Davenport Church, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.

- North Carolina becomes the 25th state to ratify the 13th amendment, abolishing slavery.
