- Skirmish at Union Mills, MO.
- The US Senate Committee overwhelming votes to establish the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, due, in part, to the fiasco at Ball's Bluff, VA.
Tuesday December 9 1862
- Skirmish at Mudtown, AR.
- Federal reconnaissance from Corinth, MS, toward Tuscumbia, AL, including skirmishes (Dec 12) at Cherokee Station and Little Bear Creek, AL. (Dec 9-14)
- Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn, CSA, is temporarily in command of the Confederate Army of the Mississippi.
- Federal expedition from Ozark, MO, into Marion County, AR, with the destruction of Confederate saltworks. (Dec 9-15)
- Skirmish at Dobbins' Ferry, near La Vergne, TN, as Brig. Gen. Joseph Wheeler, CSA, attacks a Union forage train.
- Federal reconnaissance toward Franklin, and skirmish near Brentwood, TN.
- Brig. Gen. Julius Stahel, USA, is temporarily in command of the 11th US Army Corps, the Army of the Potomac, VA.
Wednesday December 9 1863
- Federal scout from Waldron down Dutch Creek, AR.
- Maj. Gen. John G. Foster, USA, supersedes Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, USA, in the command of the Dept. of the Ohio, KY.
- The mutiny of black troops at Fort Jackson, LA, after two black soldiers are punished by whipping. The insurrection is put down by the white officers.
- Skirmish at Okolona, MS.
- Federal scout from Houston, MO, in pursuit of Rebel marauders.
- Blockade runners are being captured all along the Union blockade; today the Minna, is captured off Charleston, SC.
