• Brig. Gen. George Dashiell Bayard, USA, is mortally wounded by a shell fragment while at Brig. Gen. William Buel Franklin's Headquarters during the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA.
• Brig. Gen. Conrad Feger Jackson, USA, is mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, dying instantly after being shot in the head with a minie ball, while leading his troops.
