Monday January 6 1862
- Henry Heth, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
- Brig. Gen. Schuyler Hamilton, USA, assumes the command of the Saint Louis District, MO.
Tuesday January 6 1863
- Skirmish at Fort Lawrence, Beaver Station, MO, where Brig. Gen. John Sappington Marmaduke, CSA, burns Fort Lawrence.
Wednesday January 6 1864
- The Dept. of Arkansas and the 7th US Army Corps are officially constituted.
- Skirmish at Dalton, GA.
- Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Reynolds, USA, assumes the command of the defenses of New Orleans, LA.
- The Confederate guerrilla attack on, and the disabling of, the Federal steamer transport, the Delta, on the Mississippi River.
- Federal expedition against the Navajo Indians, under Col. Christopher "Kit" Carson, USA, from Fort Canby to the Canon de Chelly area, the New Mexico Territory. The Navajo pay dearly for burning a Texan wagon train in Apache Canon on Mar 28, 1862. Brig. Gen. James H. Carleton, USA, commanding the Dept. of New Mexico is greatly concerned over the destitute condition of the captives, begging for authority to provide clothing for the women and children. He requests the Indian Dept. act immediately before it is too late. (Jan 6-21)
- Affair at Flint Hill, VA, where charging dismounted Confederate Cavalry force the Union Cavalry pickets to fall back.
- President Jefferson Davis commutes the death penalty of a Confederate deserter, which will become more and more common.
Friday January 6 1865
