Saturday January 12 1861
  • The Mississippi House of Representatives get up and leave the United States Congress.
  • Barrancas Barracks, Fort Barrancas and Fort McRee, and the Navy-yard at Pensacola, FL, are seized by the Florida state troops.
  • The surrender of Fort Pickens, FL, is demanded by the Florida state troops after capturing the above facilities, but is refused.
Sunday January 12 1862
  • Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, Missouri State Guard, writes Maj. Gen. Henry Wager Halleck, USA, commanding the Dept. of the Missouri, to protest against the capital punishment of his men for burning bridges.
  • Federal expedition to Logan Court-House and the Guyandotte Valley, WV, as reported by Col. Edward Siber, 37th IL. (Jan 12-23)
Monday January 12 1863
  • Skirmish at Lick Creek, about 12 miles from Helena, AR.
  • Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, USA, assumes command of the 15th US Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, TN.
  • Maj. Gen. John E. Wool, USA, assumes the command of the Dept. of the East, VA.
  • President Jefferson Davis, in a speech to the 1 st Confederate Congress, is still hoping for foreign recognition.
Tuesday January 12 1864
  • Skirmish at Marshall, KY, as minor skirmishing continues all over with no major troop movements lately.
  • Affair at Matamoras, Mexico, where Union troops cross the Rio Grande, and move the US Consul to Mexico, Mr. L. Pierce, Jr., who is holding over $1,000,000, to Brownsville, TX and safety. (Jan 12-13)
  • Skirmish near Mossy Creek, TN, where a Union foraging party inflict 1 mortality and 15 prisoners on the Confederate outposts there.
  • Affair near Accotink, VA, where some of Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton's, CSA, boys capture a couple citizens and horses.
  • Affair near Ellis'Ford, VA.
  • Federal raid on the Northern Neck, VA, arriving from Norfolk to Point Lookout, then moving through the county of Richmond, then into Lancaster and Northumberland, doing very little damage, other than taking some horses and a few negroes.
Thursday January 12 1865
  • The following are appointed Union Brigadier Generals:
    • John Grant Mitchell, USA
    • John Morrison Oliver, USA
    • Benjamin Franklin Potts, USA
    • James Sidney Robinson, USA
    • Robert Kingston Scott, USA
  • Affair near Sugar Loaf Prairie, AR, where the notorious guerrilla, Cook, is smoked out of his hole up in a cave by the Yankees, and he won't live to see tomorrow. Some of his band join him, while the remainder are captured.
  • Federal expedition from Morganza, LA, with skirmishes with a few Confederates who the Yankees happen upon. The Yankees also seize Confederate supplies. The Confederacy is an empty shell by now in this area. (Jan 12-15)
  • Federal scout against guerrillas from Camp Grover to Texas Prairie, MO, with limited success. (Jan 12-15)
  • Federal scout from Warrensburg to Miami, MO, as the Yankees search for reported bushwackers proves futile. (Jan 12-17)
  • The Federal expedition convoyed by the fleet of Rear-Admiral David D. Porter, USN, sails from the rendezvous off Beaufort, NC, for Fort Fisher.
  • The above expedition arrives at Federal Point, NC, for Fort Fisher, Wilmington, NC. (Jan 12-13)
  • The State of North Carolina is merged into the Dept. of the South.
  • Maj. Gen. John G. Parke, USA, resumes command of the 9th US Army Corps, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.
