  • Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, CSA, reaches Batesville, AR, which effectively ends his expedition into Missouri, that began Dec 31 1863.
  • Federal scout between Bolivar, TN, and Ripley, MS, against guerrilla bands operating in the vicinity.
  • Skirmish near Mill Creek, TN.
  • Federal reconnaissance from Murfreesborough to Auburn, TN.
  • President Abraham Lincoln meets in Washington, DC, with Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, USA, and after refusing to dismiss many of Burnside's subordinate officers, Burnside in frustration offers to resign and in so doing, President Lincoln orders Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker, USA, to relieve Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, in command of the Army of the Potomac; Maj. Gens. Edwin Vose Sumner and William Buer Franklin are also relieved from duty in the Army of the Potomac, VA.

  • Federal expedition from Scottsborough, AL, toward Rome, GA, as Brig. Gen. Morgan L. Smith, USA, of Maj. Gen. John A. Logan's command construct a pontoon bridge across the Coosa River, capturing prisoners, forage, etc, including $5,700 in Confederate money which proved to have been a State fund for the relief of soldiers' families. (Jan 25-Feb 5)

  • The Confederate commerce raider, CSS Shenandoah, arrives at Melbourne, Australia, for repairs and provisions.
  • Skirmish near Simpsonville, Shelby County, KY, where the Union cattle guard composed of negro soldiers are attacked with a number killed and wounded.
  • Federal reconnaissance from Pocotaligo to the Salkehatchie River, SC. by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA.
  • Federal expedition from Irish Bottom to Evans' Island, TN, to secure beef cattle; the river being so full of ice, the Yankees could not get them off the island.
  • Skirmish near Powhatan, VA, the Richmond, VA, Campaign.
