- The capture of New Madrid, MO, by Brig. Gen. John Pope, USA, as Maj. Gen. John P. McCown, CSA, retreats to Island No. 10.
- The Battle of New Berne, NC. Brig. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, USA, captures the town, while Brig. Gen. Lawrence O'Bryan, CSA, retreats.
- Maj. Gen. John Clifford Pemberton, CSA, is assigned command of Confederate Dept. of South Carolina and Georgia.
