  • President Abraham Lincoln's body lies in state in New York City, NY.
  • President Andrew Johnston rejects the agreement between Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA, and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, believing Sherman went beyond his authority to negotiate such terms. Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant is ordered to assume all remaining military movements.
