Pro-Union demonstrations are held in San Francisco, CA.
Riot in Saint Louis, MO, continues from the previous day which results in several additional deaths. The 5th Missouri Reserve Regiment quell the secessionist uproar.
Brig. Gen. William S.Harney, USA, resumes the command of the Dept. of the West.
Pro-Union demonstrations are held in Wheeling, VA.

Brig. Gen. John Selden Roane, CSA, is assigned to the command in Arkansas.
Affair at Cave City, KY, where Col. John Hunt Morgan, CSA, captured a passenger train on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, KY.
Skirmish at Pulaski, TN.
With the loss of Norfolk, VA, the Confederates destroy their ironclad, the CSS Merrimac, James River, VA, as she no longer has a port to call home, and was forced to move up the James River into water too shallow.
