  • Engagement at Big Bethel, or Bethel Church, VA, 8 miles from Newport News, VA. Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, USA, is defeated by Col. John Bankhead Magruder, CSA, and retreats back to Fortress Monroe, Hampton, VA.
  • Brig. Gen. Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, CSA, is placed in the command of all the Confederate forces in the Virginia counties of Prince William, Fairfax, and Loudoun.
  • The Rockville MD, Expedition, Col. Charles Stone, 14th US Infantry, commanding a Federal expedition from Washington, D.C., to Edwards' Ferry, Potomac River, MD. (Jun 10-Jul 7)

  • Maj. Gen. William Thomas Harbaugh Brooks, USA, assumes the command of the Dept. of the Monongahela, PA.
  • Maj. Gen. Darius Nash Couch, USA, assumes the command of the Dept. of the Susquehanna, PA.
  • Federal scout on Middleton and Eagleville Pikes, TN.
  • The capture of the Union steamer, Maple Leaf, off the coast of Cape Henry, VA, after leaving Fort Delaware with 97 Rebel prisoners who overpowered the Federals aboard ship.

  • The Engagement at Brice's Cross-Roads (or Tishomingo Creek), near Guntown, MS, as Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, routs Brig. Gen. Samuel Davis Sturgis, USA. Forrest reports capturing 1,618 prisoners and scores upon scores of Federal ammunition, weapons, etc, while he reports losing 492 men.
