  • The states of Kentucky and Tennessee are constituted the Dept. of the Cumberland, under the command of Brig. Gen. Robert Anderson, USA.
  • Federal expedition to Saint Genevieve, MO, aboard the US steamer, Hannibal City, led by Maj. John McDonald, 8th MO Infantry. (Aug 15-16)
  • The 2nd ME Regiment , like the 79th NY, threatens mutiny in the Army of the Potomac.
Friday August 15 1862

  • Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, resumes command of the Confederate Army of the Mississippi.

  • Federal scout from Centreville to Aldie, VA, looking for Gen. John Mosby, CSA, and his partisan rangers, and returning with some Confederate prisoners. (Aug 15-19)

Monday August 15 1864
  • Maj. Gen. Daniel Phineas Woodbury, USA, dies from camp fever (yellow fever) at his post at Key West.FL.
  • George Washington Gordon, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • William Hugh Young, CS A, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • Lieut. Gen. Richard Taylor, CSA, is assigned to the command the Dept. of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana.
  • Federal scout from Triana to Valhermoso Springs, AL, with the capture of some mules, horses, and oxen and the destruction of 2 salt-peter works.
  • The Union raid on the Florida Railroad, including action at Gainesville, FL, (August 17th), Brig. Gen. John P. Hatch, USA, commanding the District of Florida. (Aug 15-19)
  • Skirmishes at Sandtown and Fairburn, GA.
  • Federal expedition from Paincourtville to Lake Natchez, LA, with skirmish on Grand River. (Aug 15-21)
  • Skirmish at Dripping Spring, Boone County, MO, with guerrillas led by Bill Anderson, and with Federal casualties.
  • Federal operations in Southwest Missouri and Northwestern Arkansas, Brig. Gen. John B. Sanborn, USA, commanding the District of Southwest Missouri, with skirmishes:

  • The CSS Tallahassee continues to wreak havoc on the Federal shipping, this time capturing six more, burning five, releasing one with all the Federal crew to safety off the New England coast.
  • Confederate raid on the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad, TN, as 600 cords of wood is destroyed, with employees missing feared murdered by the Rebels.
  • Skirmish at Cedar Creek, VA, the Shenandoah Valley, VA, Campaign.
